SkyDrive gives you acces to your files from anywhere at anytime. For free.

Microsoft has taken a big step towards its vision by making SkyDrive far more powerful. There are new storage options, apps that connect your devices to SkyDrive, and a more powerful device cloud that lets you “fetch” any file from a Windows PC.  Taken together with access from popular mobile phones and a browser, you can now take your SkyDrive with you anywhere, connect it to any app that works with files and folders, and get all the storage you need—making SkyDrive the most powerful personal cloud storage service available.

Here’s what’s available for use, starting now:

  • SkyDrive for the Windows desktop (preview available now). View and manage your personal SkyDrive directly from Windows Explorer on Windows 8, Windows 7, and Windows Vista with this new preview app available in 106 languages worldwide.
  • Fetching files through SkyDrive.com. Easily access, browse, and stream files from a remote PC running the preview app to just about anywhere by simply fetching them via SkyDrive.com.
  • SkyDrive storage updates. A new, more flexible approach to personal cloud storage that allows power users to get additional paid storage as their needs grow.
• SkyDrive for other devices. We’ve updated the SkyDrive apps on Windows Phone and iOS devices, bringing better management features and sharing options to those devices. We’re also releasing a new preview client for Mac OS X Lion, letting you manage your SkyDrive right from the Finder.

You can download the new SkyDrive apps now. If you want to read more about the new functionalities of SkyDrive, you can do so here.

Microsoft Innovation Centre Flanders launched in Genk and Kortrijk

In the presence of Minister-President Kris Peeters,  Minister of Social Affairs, Health and Family, Jo Vandeurzen and Philippe Rogge,  General Manager of Microsoft, the Microsoft Innovation Center Flanders has been launched simultaneously in Genk and Kortrijk. The MIC Flanders is the third innovation center that Microsoft opens in Belgium. Each center works as a public-private partnership which aims to stimulate the development of ICT applications, to create new companies and jobs. The MIC Flanders has two operational offices, one in Genk and the other one in Kortrijk.

The onset to open a MIC in Flanders was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Minister-President Kris Peeters and Microsoft last year. The objective was to create a center promoting the development of ICT in Flanders and stimulating this development particularly in the health sector.

The cities of Genk and Kortrijk and Microsoft have therefore founded an association that aims to:

  • Stimulate ICT projects in Flanders in the areas of health; educate and inform on the topic.
  • Give advice and guidance’s to companies active in the development of computer applications; help them through the use of new technologies like cloud computing or the use of natural interaction with a computer.
  • Guide start-ups who engage themselves in projects focusing on e-Health.

The decision to focus on e- health was taken not only because of the important and strategic role for the plan ‘Vlaanderen in Actie’ this sector plays, but also because of the significant value e-health brings to the social and economic sector of the Region.
The MIC serves as a catalyst for regional IT companies, innovators, start-ups and spin-off’s, but also for the government and institutions. In addition, the MIC will inform them about new opportunities and applications and will help to create new companies and thus new jobs.  Networking also is an element that is marked in capital letters in the objectives of the new Microsoft innovation center.

Operations on 4 axes:

  • Networking: creating a positive frame for IT innovation and for a place where people can meet and enrich themselves on matters of common interests.
  • Discover and learn: the transmission of expertise around new technologies through conferences, seminars and workshops.
  • Innovate: around new technologies and create new innovative applications through “calls for projects” that are directly related to professional opportunities.
  • Entrepreneurship: Start-ups are guided and supported through boot-camps in which everyone’s ideas can turn into business plan.

A lot of attention is being paid to data security and privacy:  two themes that are of primordial importance in the health sector. Since often patients have difficulties using IT, and service providers should give priority to patients, special attention will be paid to natural and intuitive technologies.

The organizational structure

The MIC Flanders is organized as a public-private partnership, just like MIC Brussels and MIC Mons. The Flemish government has committed to an initial contribution of 35%. The cities of Genk and Kortrijk give 15% and which brings  the government’s contribution to 50%. Microsoft takes the responsibility for 30% of the costs and the last 20% come from additional private sector partners. All these actors commit to the MIC for an initial period of three years that can be renewed afterwards.
The funds will be spent on projects in both locations with a centralized management for the budget under the responsibility of the Director of the MIC Flanders, who is accountable  to the Board of directors. The Board consists of representatives of the cities of Genk and Kortrijk, and of Microsoft. This board can be further expanded with experts, government officials and target groups.

Each office will have an Office Manager and a Project Manager who will ensure the good functioning of the centers. Active collaboration with other organizations with similar objectives is expected to maximize synergies and minimize duplication in the initiatives.

The success of the method:

Flanders is happy to also have a MIC on its territory, especially a center that creates future opportunities for patients and for the economic impulse by young, future-oriented businesses. To Genk and Kortrijk, the launch of MIC also means a promising challenge, since in both cities an ecosystem of entrepreneurs, partners and institutions will be created.

The MIC of Mons is a great evidence of success of the MIC-formula. At its beginning in 2009, the Microsoft Innovation Center of Mons had ambitious goals. In three years, the MIC had to create 250 jobs, to coach 25 start-ups and to deliver certificates to 500 candidates. But these goals have been largely surpassed with the creation of 266 jobs, the launch of 30 start-ups and the certification of 1,112 people.

The MIC Brussels has been launched recently and focuses on cloud applications.

The new Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC) in Flanders is looking for partners.

Monday, March 19, the Microsoft Innovation Center Flanders will be opened in Kortrijk and Genk. This MIC has as a goal to:

  • Stimulate ICT projects in Flanders in the areas of health; educate and inform on the subject.
  • Give advices and guidance’s to companies active in the development of computer applications; help them through the use of new technologies like cloud computing or the use of natural interaction with a computer.
  • Guide start-ups who engage themselves in projects focusing on e-Health.

The MIC Flanders is still looking for structural partners. These partners will be engaging with the founding partners of MIC Flanders (City of Genk, City of Kortrijk and Microsoft). The structural partners will contribute to achieving the objectives of the MIC Flanders not only with resources but also with their expertise input. The partners have access to the MIC Flanders ‘community ‘ composed of specialized developers and entrepreneurs; they receive a great valorization of their research and a visibility within the healthcare sector. The partner’s commitment will be for a minimum of 3 years and is renewable. The minimum membership fee is 75.000 Euro per year.

The MIC Flanders is the third innovation center that Microsoft has opened in Belgium in a public-private partnership. The MIC aims to stimulate the development of ICT applications and to create new companies and jobs. It serves as a catalyst for regional IT companies, innovators, start-ups and spin-off’s, and for the government and institutions alike. The MIC will inform all organisations concerned about new opportunities and applications and will help to create new companies and thus new jobs.

The MIC will work on 4 axes:

  • Networking: creating a positive frame for IT innovation and for a place where people can meet and enrich themselves on matters of common interests.
  • Discover and learn: the transmission of expertise around new technologies through conferences, seminars and workshops.
  • Innovate: around new technologies and create new innovative applications through “calls for projects” that are directly related to professional opportunities.
  • Entrepreneurship: Start-ups are guided and supported through boot-camps in which everyone’s ideas can turn into a business plan.

As a partner of the MIC, you will  get benefits and advantages like visibility, activities, call for projects, facilities and the membership to the Board of the association.

  • Visibility: the partner has a significant exposure with his logo on the website, on the press releases and news, on the banners…
  • Activities: The MIC Flanders organizes many activities to which all members and associates have access to.
  • Call for Project: partners use the MIC’s platform for the organization of ‘call for project’
  • Facilities: partners may use specific infrastructures in the MIC Flanders such as meeting rooms, seminar rooms, demo rooms, etc.
  • Board of Directors: partners will have a seat on the Board of the MIC Flanders

Applications need be sent to Stefaan.DeClerck@kortrijk.be (Mayor city of Kortrijk), to Wim.Dries@Genk.be (Mayor city of Genk) or Lucvdv@microsoft.com ( Luc Van de Velde, Director Developer&Platform Group Microsoft). Applications need t be in before April 30th 2012.

Applications need to have the following information:

  • Name and Activity of the company
  • Contact person details (email, mobile)
  • Short description of the motivation
  • Short list of projects that are eligible for a ‘call for project’

Framerate Fest 2012: a contest for developers in Belgium and in the Netherlands

Frame Fest 2012, the second edition of this contest, brings together web designers and developers from Belgium and the Netherlands to design a ‘frame’ based on HTML5 and controlled by the Kinect. The best frames will be selected by a jury of 3 experts. Each judge composes his own team of developers and every participant has to fight to win his place against the others.
Developers who want to participate in this contest must submit their HTML5 frame on this website. Participation is completely free.

Participants have to deliver a frame and post it on the website before the 25th of March. Through various communications’ channels, they can  promote their design. The website’ visitors who vote will determine the finalists.

In the second stage of the competition, the contest becomes even more exciting. Two Dutch coaches (Wesley ter Haar from MediaMonks and Boris van de Ven from Gamekings) and a Belgian coach (Bart de Waele from Netlash-bSeen) pick the finalists for each team and build from the starting frames a Superframe.
The Grand Final is held in the Netherlands for a live audience. Public and fans vote online for their favorite Superframe and choose the winner.

“The entire contest is a creative challenge for designers and developers,” said Vincent Joris, Manager for Internet Explorer in Belgium and Luxembourg. “The theme of Framefest 2012 ‘Let the Frames Begins’ was planned by the company These Days to demonstrate the capabilities of Internet Explorer and the Kinect in the Benelux but also beyond. I am convinced that both Internet Explorer 9 and all the developers who participate have everything to gain by joining this contest.”

Microsoft Innovation Center Mons exceeds goals after 3 years

In the presence of Minister Jean-Claude Marcourt, MIC Mons presented its activity report of its three years of existence. The Innovation Center has been created in partnership with the public and the private sector. At the date of its creation, ambitious goals had been set. MIC had to create 250 new jobs and 25 startups in 3 years’ time. These goals have been largely exceeded with 266 new jobs created, 30 startups being coached and 1112 people certified in different IT skills.

It is clear that that in a short time, MIC Mons has become a real center of IT activity in the region. Almost 500 events have been organized in the years of its existence, to which almost 10.000 people participated. 12 call for projects have been organized to which 300 people participated.

MIC Director Piquard: big ambitions for MIC in Wallonia

MIC Mons will keep this intense pace and will even go further. It will also start coaching programs for trainees at small entreprises and startups. “These often have interesting themes for people to work on” says Ben Piquard, director of the MIC. “With the broad experience we have built in the past 3 years, we want to intensify our activities and broaden our partnerships with the private and the public sector for the whole of the Walloon region.”
