01/05/2012

Microsoft has taken a big step towards its vision by making SkyDrive far more powerful. There are new storage options, apps that connect your devices to SkyDrive, and a more powerful device cloud that lets you “fetch” any file from a Windows PC.  Taken together with access from popular mobile phones and a browser, you can now take your SkyDrive with you anywhere, connect it to any app that works with files and folders, and get all the storage you need—making SkyDrive the most powerful personal cloud storage service available.

Here’s what’s available for use, starting now:

  • SkyDrive for the Windows desktop (preview available now). View and manage your personal SkyDrive directly from Windows Explorer on Windows 8, Windows 7, and Windows Vista with this new preview app available in 106 languages worldwide.
  • Fetching files through SkyDrive.com. Easily access, browse, and stream files from a remote PC running the preview app to just about anywhere by simply fetching them via SkyDrive.com.
  • SkyDrive storage updates. A new, more flexible approach to personal cloud storage that allows power users to get additional paid storage as their needs grow.
• SkyDrive for other devices. We’ve updated the SkyDrive apps on Windows Phone and iOS devices, bringing better management features and sharing options to those devices. We’re also releasing a new preview client for Mac OS X Lion, letting you manage your SkyDrive right from the Finder.

You can download the new SkyDrive apps now. If you want to read more about the new functionalities of SkyDrive, you can do so here.

Hotmail and SkyDrive fit for social and app-age

15/12/2011

The past couple of weeks, Hotmail and SkyDrive got a great refresh, making both of them totally fit for the age of social and apps.

Hotmail adapted to the new way people communicate. It needs to go fast and easy. Well, Hotmail today is 10 times faster than it was in 2006. It became also a lot safer. Thanks to the combination of Smartscreen filters and the Trusted Sender principle, spam has been reduced from 35% to in between 0 and 3%.

Hotmail has got now a number of new functions that makes it a lot easier to handle your mail. F.i. you can use the Smart Newsletter Filter that allows you to mark and delete all newsletters with one click.

With Categories and enhanced folder management, you can categorise your mails from within you mailbox.  And when you want Hotmail to do the job for you, you simply automate your mailbox cleaning your old mails, newsletters and outdated promotional offers.Last, when you really don’t want to forget action on a mail, you simply flag it, and it will stay on top of all your mails. Neat, isn’t it?

Hotmail was already intregrated in Windows Phone, now it is also available in an app for Android phones.

The same handy app-roach exists now also for SkyDrive. SkyDrive is the free 25Gb storage room you get in the cloud. Files, pictures and documents -that you can edit and create in the free Office Web apps- you have them all at hand on your mobile phone in a click. And what’s more, the app is also availible for iPhone.

On top of it SkyDrive got also Hotmail-like handy features. You can create files in one click, move them or rename hem. You got more documents to download to your SkyDrive? Just select them all, and let them download do the job while you can do something else in the mean time.

And most inportantly in these social times: since SkyDrive is linked to social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn, you just have to click to share your documents with a friend or with the world. Select the ‘allow editing’ function, and your addressee can adapt your documents. That looks like a free SharePoint solution indeed.
